Do I Need A Retainer?

The purpose of a retainer is to prevent your teeth from shifting after you have completed your orthodontic treatment. Whether you have completed Invisalign treatment or have worn traditional braces, you will need to wear your retainer to prevent your teeth from reverting back to their pre-treatment condition.

On average, it takes about a year for the teeth to stabilize in their new position. During this time frame, your teeth are more likely to shift back to their previous position because the bone has not fully formed around your teeth in their new position. A retainer can help stabilize your teeth and encourage them to stay in their proper position as the bone grows.

Our team at Flower Mound Orthodontics can work with you to find the right type of retainer for your needs. We offer the Hawley retainer and the Essix retainer. Visit us to determine which option is right for you.

Haley Retainer

The Hawley retainer is one of the most common types of retainers on the market. It is designed to wrap around six teeth at a time to help keep them in place. Unlike traditional retainers, the Hawley retainer can be used for both the upper and lower arch of teeth.

Essix Retainer

The Essix retainers are clear snap-on retainers that fit snugly over your teeth.  As with any type of retainer, it is important to keep your Essix retainer clean. It is susceptible to normal wear and tear but can last for many years with proper care and maintenance.
