How Stress Affects Your Oral Health

During this stressful time, Flower Mound Orthodontics is here to remind you how stress can affect your oral health. As we all know, our mental, physical, and dental health are all intertwined together. Here are some common ways that stress affects your oral health:

A very common response to stress is teeth grinding. If you notice yourself clenching your teeth together during the day, it is also possible that you do this in your sleep. Teeth grinding and clenching can put a strain on the teeth, which can eventually impact the positioning of your teeth. For our orthodontic patients, this puts you especially at risk for orthodontic relapse. Orthodontic relapse can be treated depending on the severity of malocclusion and the degree of tooth misalignment. Our team at Flower Mound Orthodontics offers comprehensive solutions and in-depth oral exams to correct an orthodontic relapse.

Under high amounts of stress, it can be difficult to prioritize oral hygiene. However, our team does not want to see you deal with the consequences of poor oral hygiene when all of this stress subsides. If you are currently undergoing orthodontic care, it’s important that you keep up a good oral hygiene routine at home so that your treatment is not interrupted. Additionally, if you are an Invisalign patient, we want to encourage you to continue cleaning your Invisalign aligners between meals so they maintain their clear appearance. Don’t let stress affect your end goal of a beautiful smile. Take care of yourself, and also remember to take care of your teeth too.

We understand that right now, during the coronavirus crisis, patients are putting off their visits to the dentist and orthodontist. However, for our orthodontic patients, we also understand that you may be in the middle of your treatment plan and do not want to increase the amount of time your treatment will take. The length of orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient.  We encourage our orthodontic patients to contact us for advice on how to proceed with their orthodontic care during this time.

Our entire team is continuously trained on best practices and routinely follow strict sanitary and preventive measures to avoid spreading any type of disease. Our office is also sanitized frequently, and all of our equipment is sterilized between patient visits. You can rest assured that when you come to our office, we will take every precaution that we can to keep both you and our staff safe.

Flower Mound Orthodontics is a family-centered orthodontics practice, proudly serving patients in Flower Mound, Lewisville, Highland Village and many surrounding communities.
