3 Braces-Approved, Smile-Friendly Snacks

3 Braces-Approved, Smile-Friendly SnacksMany of our patients are concerned about the dietary adjustments that must be made with braces. While some people opt for Invisalign to help them avoid these constraints, others must adapt to some snack substitutions during their orthodontic treatment. At Flower Mound Orthodontics, we want to help you navigate the world of snacking with your braces. Here are our best snack suggestions that are braces-approved and smile-friendly for all.

Cheese

Soft cheeses are a great snack for your smile. Stringed cheese, sliced cheese, cubed cheese, or any other type of cheese is braces-approved. This is because they are easy to chew without being overly sticky. Additionally, cheese is good for all smiles because it contains high amounts of proteins and calcium, which your teeth need in order to be healthy. Cheese is also known to weaken any acidic residue left behind on your teeth, helping prevent plaque buildup. This makes it a much better snack than a bowl of candy or a bag of potato chips because you get a lot of delicious flavor without the unnecessary sugars and starches.

Fruit Smoothies

Fruit smoothies are easy on your orthodontics while also being good for your overall dental health. You can pack all of your favorite fruits into a smoothie, but we recommend kiwis or strawberries. Kiwi is full of fiber and calcium, while strawberries are just as fibrous while also offering a heaping of vitamin C. Vitamin C does wonders for your overall health, and helps your mouth fight against gum disease. However, it is important to keep in mind that most fruits contain acids which can be tough on your teeth. Follow up a fruit smoothie with a glass of water to help wash away any acidic residue and this snack is smile-friendly.

Soft or Softened Vegetables

Soft vegetables like cucumbers or peppers are safe for people with braces to consume. Additionally, softened vegetables like cooked carrots, broccoli, or salad greens are good too. You want to be careful with any uncooked veggies that require a little too much crunch as this can damage your brackets and wires. Fortunately, soft or softened vegetables are a snack that is good for you in all aspects beyond your dental health. They contain essential vitamins and minerals that will help keep you healthy and strong.
